Black Swan

Here I go, I just happened to see Darren Aronofsky’s film, Black Swan and I am in total awe of it. In a swan like grace, the director has splendidly encapsulated every moment on reel. The most impressive thing about this movie were the alluring, graphically memorable posters in addition to the regular movie posters, showing the contrast between the graceful yet fragile dancer against the menacing black swan.

Designed by La Boca, a London-based design firm, the four posters, as described by Nouse.co.uk, are nostalgic of the bygone era. They are reminiscent of the Polish and Czech film posters of the 60’s, 70’s, and early 80’s, engaging in a diverse artsy movements such as surrealism, cubist, symbolism and art nouveau. The posters are an artistic complement to the film, reviving the graphic movement in poster making.

These graphic posters have filtered down to t-shirt designs by designer Markus Lupfer showcasing his Embellished Swan Dress onAsos.com. This truly coincides with the trend of printed or embellished animal prints on t-shirts and sweaters. Although, Amy Westcott was the official costume designer, The Rodarte sisters have designed the stunning ‘vulture inspired’ collection for the movie. Nevertheless, the beautifully crafted tutu dresses worn by Natalie Portman have further enhanced her beauty on-screen.

Rodarte, otherwise known as Kate and Laura Mulleavy have created 40 costumes for the psychological thriller, although my favourites are the beautifully illustrated costumes of the ‘Black Swan’ and the ‘White Swan’, which I have displayed along with some look-alikes of styles available online based on the theme ‘Black Swan’. The movie, the costumes, the graphic posters all have an undeniable aesthetic quality to it. I recommend the movie to all despite all the negative feedback.
