Berne, Switzerland

How could I come to Switzerland and not visit its capital, Berne? Berne or Bern or Bundesstadt, is a German speaking city in Switzerland’s cantons. So, here’s a glimpse of the beauty of Berne sans too many pics on monuments and heritage sites.

Located in north-central Switzerland in the German-speaking county, Lucerne, capital and city, is a charmingly beautiful haven for tourists with historic sites, landmark buildings and a getaway to some of the best hill resorts – Mt. Titlis, Mt. Pilatus, Rigi on the Swiss Alps and Stanserhorn. The Lucerne Railway Station has a beautiful cupola entrance that leads to Lake Lucerne and an underground tunnel that connects to the Culture and Convention Centre, which also houses the Kunstmuseum Luzern (Museum of Art, Luzern).

Sited on Lake Lucerne and imbedded within the impressive panorama of mountains, Lucerne offers a fascinating view of the medieval city with the iconic Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) on River Reuss, the city walls with nine watchtowers and its chapels and facades. The historic wooden Chapel Bridge was built in 1333 and restored in 1993, has a number of attractions including many 17th century paintings and an octagonal water tower.

Located at 3,238 meters above sea level in the Urner Alps of Switzerland, Mt. Titlis forms borders between the cantons of Obswalden and Berne in Switzerland, overlooking Engelberg. Connected through Rail Europe from Lucerne, Zurich, Basel and Berne, Mt. Titlis can be reached via the famous rotating cable car, Titlis Rotair.

This particular image above fascinates me as it gives that feel, as if I were on an imaginary planet, maybe the Moon and this was a colony with Space Stations; a truly futuristic feel.

This so-called Space Station is actually a Communications & Weather tower atop Mt. Titlis which offers a panoramic view of its snowy surroundings. The mountain top offers a stunning view of the glaciers from the “Stotzig Egg – viewpoint”. Not to miss among the various attractions are the Glacier Cave, the photo studio and world’s highest watch showroom at the mountain peak.

One of the largest ski and snowboard destinations in Switzerland and a place for snow activities such as snow tubing, sledge at Titlis Glacier Park, this place is a summer and winter abode for tourists from worldover. The Titlis IceFlyer Chairlift is one of the major attractions, dropping tourists back and forth to the Titlis Glacier Park.

After an adventurous snow ride, I headed back to Engelberg to catch my next train to Lucerne. Although, the surprising aspect of this trip was the poster of Shah Rukh Khan (Indian actor) and Kajol (Indian actress) from Dilwale Dulhaniya Lejayenge movie put right at the entrance of Mt. Tiltis and even more amusing was to watch all the Indians posing happily right next to it (P.S. not me).

Engelberg, in the canton of Obwalden in Switzerland, is a beautiful village overlooking Mt. Titlis with breathtaking views, stunning landscape and mountain scenery. An ideal dream destination for spa-lovers, skiers and honeymooners from India. It is also an attractive filmshoot location for popular Indian movie song-dance sequences wherein the actress dances on the snowy terrains in skimpy chiffon or georgette sarees (poor thing must be freezing in the cold) and the actor (main hero), all geared up in winter-wear, is all set to romance her. Nevertheless, Switzerland has thus, become a dream destination for Indian tourists which has increased the tourism revenue for Swiss government, I am sure!!

Gruyère, Swiss – Eurotrip

9 May

Gruyère, a small medieval picturesque town at the foots of Pre-Alps, known for its famous ‘Gruyère Cheese‘. I arrived at Gruyère after an hour-long journey, a slow train ride along the mountain side with an astounding view of the farms, cliffs, snow and coniferous trees. I have no words to describe the beauty of Switzerland.  Every image gets registered in your mind through the lens of your eye. Your camera cannot do justice to this marvellous natural beauty.

Gruyère Cheese Factory – La Maison Du Gruyère

La Maison du Gruyère, situated right behind Gruyère station is one of the culinary landmark of Switzerland. The ‘Gruyère Cheese’ has its own unique ‘geographical indication‘ and La Maison du Gruyère demonstrates the great ‘cheese-making‘ history of this place.

Lausanne, Swiss – Eurotrip

Lausanne Capitale Olympic, Switzerland

Lausanne, the Olympic Capital of the World, located in Romandy in the French speaking part of Swiss was my next destination. Although, as usual I missed out on the sports part of it during my sight seeing, I got to see the beautiful natural beauty of Lausanne. I was not so keen on seeing every museum, but my main purpose in Switzerland was to see the scenic beauty.

Saint-François church, Lausanne, Switzerland

Saint-François church, built in 12th and 13th century and now standing amidst modern day banks, post office buildings and retail stores, was my first pitstop at Laussane. This church was reminiscent of the medieval times even amongst the bustling traffic filled street and busy shoppers.

The Swiss are known for their watches, chocolates and love for luxury, clearly visible on the high street, in the shops and through their luxurious and extravagant window display.

Built by medieval architect Villard de Honnecourt, the gothic-styled Lausanne Cathedral, also known as The Cathedral of Notre Dame had a beautiful view from across the bridge. Splendid facades, intricately carved statues and vividly painted stained glass windows are the prominent features of this internationally renowned medieval church.

Additionally, it contains the following museums: Cantonal museum of fine art, Museum of Archeology and history, Numismatic museum, Geological museum and the Zoological museum.

Palais de Justice, Lausanne

My last stop was the Palais de Justice in Montbenon, Lausanne which had a beautiful view from its garden that faces Lake Geneva and the Alps. The view was breathtakingly beautiful and stunning.

Morges, Swiss – Eurotrip

22 Apr

Day-time in summers in Europe are pretty long. The sun sets only at around 9pm. This gave me a chance to not only cover Geneva but also Morges on the same day in Swiss. Lucky for me, Morges was having its ‘Tulip Festival’. Beauty beyond words, I will be not be writing much in this blog. I shall let the photographs speak for themselves.

Heaven, Switzerland

I went to Switzerland for the second time during my Eurotrip. Although, exactly a year back, when I visited Swiss for the first time, it was like being in heaven. The summer of 2010 was the most blissful and relaxing period of my life.

My first solo trip to Switzerland and my first pit stop being – Geneva. I tried covering Geneva in a day, but couldn’t visit the Red Cross and the UN Palace of Nations. Yet, my camera caught the beautiful blooming moments of Geneva Spring.

Delft – Eurotrip

11 Feb

Christmas Lights, Delft

So, after having a wonderful time at Brussels, we left the same day for Delft, Netherlands. It was a rather tiresome journey in the snow. Next day, we had a walk-a-tour of Delft – looking at the graffiti chalked streets to the beautiful frozen canals.

Canals of Delft, Netherlands

We wandered about the town square where the Christmas decorations were being put up. The Renaissance-style City Hall built in expensive limestone and beautiful architecture emblazoned with the Coat of Arms was prominently visible in the Market Square at Delft, Netherlands.

City Hall, Delft

Another prominent structure in the Market Square is the ‘New Church’  (Nieuwe Kerk), the landmark Protestant Church in Delft, present exactly opposite to the City Hall.

Nieuwe Kerk, Delft

Not to miss among the best attractions of Delft Market Square is the ‘Blue Heart of Delft’ situated to the north-east of the main Church entrance. The beautiful heart cut in sapphire (fake) stone is a marvel to look at, symbolically representing the Blue Pottery of Delft.

Wooden shoes, Delft

I am still curious about the wooden shoes sold as souvenirs in Netherlands. Have to find out more!!

Nevetheless, among the old structures the Eastern Gate (Oostport) still stands as one of the remaining city walls in Delft.

Oostport (The Eastern Gate), Delft

Although, it was freezing, the yummy,  hot, ‘Stroopwaffles’ compensated for it. It was beautiful to watch the sunset and the moon rise over the canals of Delft, making it a very memorable experience.

We made our way to the ‘Tu Delft’ university with the campus spread over 3 acres. We had a wonderful bird’s eye of the city atop one of the tallest university buildings.
